Victoria and Jonathan’s engagement session was extra special because it was my very first time visiting Santa Barbara.
When we started planning their engagement photos, they suggested two locations that were meaningful to them: Music Academy of the West and nearby Butterfly Beach. Victoria’s grandmother lives in Santa Barbara, making the area even more special for them and the perfect place to celebrate this exciting season of life.
From the moment I met these two, I could tell how much they genuinely enjoy being together. They are sweet, kind, and incredibly easygoing. Those are always my favorite couples because the connection is already there. My job is simply to document it.
One detail I thought was pretty special was that Victoria’s last name is actually West. While walking through the beautiful grounds, it struck me how fitting it was that we were creating Music Academy of the West Engagement Photos for a couple whose story had brought us here in the first place.
A Personal Connection to Santa Barbara
Most people don’t know this, but visiting Santa Barbara was a full-circle moment for me.
When I graduated from high school in 2001, I was accepted to Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. Attending photography school there was a dream come true. Unfortunately, as the son of a single mother raising seven children, attending simply wasn’t financially possible.
Life took me down a different path, but photography never left my heart.
More than twenty years later, I found myself standing in Santa Barbara with my camera in hand, photographing an amazing couple’s engagement session. As we explored the city, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far the journey had come. While it wasn’t the path I originally imagined, it felt incredibly meaningful to finally be here doing exactly what I love.
Why I Love Music Academy of the West Engagement Photos
One of the reasons I love photographing Music Academy of the West Engagement Photos is the incredible variety the property offers.
The Spanish architecture, colorful tile staircases, manicured gardens, and towering trees create so many beautiful backdrops within a single location. Every corner feels unique and offers something different.
One of my favorite spots during Victoria and Jonathan’s session was the massive banyan tree. The size and beauty of the tree made for some truly stunning photographs and quickly became one of my favorite locations of the evening.
Music Academy of the West Engagement Photos have a timeless and romantic feel that perfectly matches the beauty of Santa Barbara.
As we wandered through the grounds, Victoria and Jonathan relaxed into the session. They laughed together, held hands, and enjoyed spending time with one another. Those genuine moments are always my favorite to capture.
Butterfly Beach Engagement Photos at Sunset
After finishing their Music Academy of the West Engagement Photos, we headed to Butterfly Beach just in time for sunset.
The beach provided a completely different backdrop for the second half of the session. The elegant gardens and architecture were replaced with ocean views, soft sand, and beautiful golden light reflecting across the water.
Victoria and Jonathan kicked off their shoes and walked along the shoreline as the sun slowly dropped toward the horizon.
Butterfly Beach engagement photos are always beautiful, but what made this session stand out was how comfortable and playful these two became as the evening went on.
My Favorite Part of the Session
Without question, my favorite moments happened near the very end of the session.
By then, the nerves were gone.
The camera disappeared.
And the focus shifted completely to each other.
There were piggyback rides, lots of laughter, and even some running through the sand as the sky filled with color.
Some of my favorite images from the entire gallery came from those unscripted moments. Looking through the photographs afterward, I couldn’t help but smile because they perfectly captured who Victoria and Jonathan are together.
Not just a beautiful couple.
Not just a beautiful location.
But two people who genuinely enjoy being around each other.
