Johanna & Darren | Shipwrecks Beach Poipu

My last weddings of 2016! I was lucky enough to travel to Hawaii for my first ever wedding gig there. I couldn’t have asked for a better couple to photograph — of course, I might be a little biased, considering it was my brother-in-law Darren and his now-wife, Johanna!

One of the many things that stood out to me while I was photographing Darren and Johanna was how much love they have for each other. The way they smile and see each other, it’s like there’s no one else in the room with them. That love and happiness they have for each other was infectious, and everyone who was around them for the entire day couldn’t help but smile in their presence.

When the two asked me if I would photograph their wedding at Shipwrecks Beach, I was instantly honored and excited. Their only concern was whether I’d still be able to enjoy the wedding with them and be a part of their day. But that’s how Johanna and Darren are—they are caring, loving people who cared deeply about their friends and loved ones being able to enjoy themselves.

Capturing these special, natural moments at weddings is a great way to be a part of the day, though, and there were plenty of them! A lot of the pictures you see in their shoot are the two of them (as well as Darren’s daughters) just being themselves.

There were so many sweet moments, but one that really stands out to me is the moment Darren gifted each of his three girls a ring with their nickname engraved inside to symbolize how he will always be there for them.

It was truly a special wedding, and I was so honored to be able to capture the wedding of my brother-in-law and my new sister-in-law.
